ALOFTS - a new business commissioning self-employed makers
I feel very passionately about supporting each other through this time. After all, if we don’t how could we possibly expect anybody else to help us too?
ALOFTS is a new business launched in early September, commissioning seamsters and costume makers to construct beautiful theatre themed items. We approached this project as we would a costume design, so all of our custom printed fabrics and quotes have their own story.
ALOFTS aims to help bring a much needed income to some of the self-employed seamsters and costume makers we previously worked with through “Go For Wardrobe", our costume and wardrobe business. These seamsters have been unable to continue with the work they also love since theatres all over the country closed on 17 March 2020.
Coronavirus has devastated the live entertainment industry that I have known and adored since 10 years old, when I started attending kids theatre workshops. It’s all I’ve ever known. With a huge question mark now hanging over the industry that has survived for 4000 years, I felt compelled to do something to try and help some of my friends and colleagues who have been hit hard in recent months. I was not prepared to just sit and wait it out and hope it would go away quickly.
Through ALOFTS we have been able to support many seamsters and costume makers, but there’s many more we want to help. They have worked on some of Britain’s best-loved musicals, operas and music productions, showing that anybody can be affected by our industry shutdown.
Have a look at our website for more details, the story behind each of the designs and our shop page. Maybe you could help #supportalofts
